Here I post what I do when I am productive or do something special.
12/10/2024: starting on my stylized dungeon
First of all I had to think how I wanted it to look like. I wanted a labyrinth of halls and rooms with every room having its purpose. So I began thinking of what I wanted to include and started making a moodboard to set my ideas and the style in stone.
My idea was to first start making the environment such as the walls, floor, pillars, torches, etc... to set the tone for the rest of the models to come. However, modeling the environment completely would take too much time, so I decided to work with modular pieces to decrease the amount of time spent on making it.
I first began making the pillars. I would make at least three variant to not make the dungeon itself too repetitive. Even though it are only slight changes, I still feel it would make the whole project more interesting to look at. I also made sure the pillars had some scratches and broken off parts to make sure the whole project felt old and worn.
Next I wanted to make a doorway. This would later be used to make a variation of the walls I will make. There is also the possibility to make a door for these doorways, but I still have to see if I wanted to do that for some of the rooms I want to make. Again I would add some scratches and broken off parts to make it feel old and worn.
After that, I began on making the walls. Here, I has to make sure they would fit in nicely with the pieces I already made. In was also thinking of making it tileable to make longer walls for some rooms or halls. Once I was done modeling, detailing and texturing I began merging it with the doorway and making it so that there was an actual hole to walk through. Unfortunately, I forgot to make a variation and lost the original wall design. This meant I had to either remake the wall or try and recreate the pieces that I removed. I decided to call it a day and deal with this mistake tommorow.
This hurt my soul :')
At least it didn't look that bad!
13/10/2024: Making the walls and the floor
After rediscovering what I had done yesterday I started remaking the walls. I felt like they lacked a bit of detail, so some additions were done compared to the first ones such as some protruding bricks at the base and edge. i also added the scratches and even gave the bricks some height difference. This time I did not forget to make a variant :)
Next I wanted to have a floor. This needed to be made with a bit more caution, as I wanted it to be tileable. In the end, it was quite easy to pull off without too much problems. As usual, I gave it some details by adding scratches and some broken off parts together with different colors to break it up even more. I also added the height difference in the bricks like I did with the walls as I quite liked it.
The tiling has worked out pretty well!
With all this, I decided to make a little example of how all the components look as a whole. For now, I will stick to a simple little hall that has a doorway at the end like it shows in the picture.
This was the render with lighting:
14/10/2024: Making the roof and roof supports
Today, I wanted to give the hall a completed feel by adding a roof. Doing this was not as easy as I had hoped, as I wanted to give it the same feel as the the floor. The problem now was that I had to do this in a curve that gave some problems when I wanted to detail or move bricks. In the end it turned out fine.
Now I wanted to make some roof supports to help blend in the pillars at the walls. This would also break up the monotone roof shape and make it more interesting. I did this the same way as I made the doorway, and after some detailing and coloring it blended in nicely with the roof and pillars.
I also had an idea to make another variation of the roof so that I could switch up the size of the halls. I basically repeated the same processes that I did for the smaller ones, added the needed details, colors and height variations.
For the previous roof supports I had not thought about having size differences in the bricks, so I decided to try it out on the larger ones. Safe to say it makes it a bit more interesting and makes it pop a bit more! I will absolutely add this to the other one tomorrow.
Now I wanted to make a hall that was bigger and see how it looked like when it was complete. However, I found out that I had not made the walls tileable for this kind of stuff, so I will add this tomorrow probably. But even then, I think the larger variation of the hall still looks nice and will totally go well with the dungeon! I do think that it might be a little too low for such a large hall. I might try and make it higher, or make some pillars as support for the middle. I hope that might make it feel less awkward. Maybe I'll even add some gutters too along the sides for some more details, or some kind of platform for in the middle. But for now, I am leaving it at this.
This was the result when everything was added together.
15/10/2024: Adding details to the small roof support and making the wall piece tileable
Today I had a busy day, so I could just do the minimal for now. I added the size differences to the small roof support that I had added to the other one yesterday. I also fixed the problem with the wall pieces being not tileable so I could finish the wall at the end. Although, I did add an extension to the pillars too, so I could have ignored it. I did it anyway just because I know it would come in handy later in.
For now, this project has been stopped to make time for school. Ihope to be able to continue it soon!
